Saint George's Festival in Ragusa Ibla is one of Sicily's most anticipated and evocative religious celebrations, attracting thousands of faithful and visitors each year. This event, which takes place between April and June, represents a moment of great devotion and tradition, with a unique blend of sacred rites, popular shows, and folkloric events.

The festival kicks off on April 23rd with the “scinnuta” (descent) of the statue of Saint George and the Sacred Ark, a solemn moment that opens a period of intense religious celebrations. However, it is the last weekend of May or the first few days of June that mark the peak of the festivities. During these days, Ragusa Ibla comes alive with processions, fireworks, and musical bands, transforming the village into a vibrant stage of colours and sounds.

On Friday, the procession leads the simulacrum of Saint George and the Sacred Ark from the cathedral to the Church of Purgatory, through the historic streets of Ibla. On Saturday, the procession repeats the route in reverse, with ever-increasing participation from faithful and tourists.

Sunday, the heart of the festival, is marked by the triumphant exit of Saint George from the Cathedral, greeted by an explosion of colourful balloons and spectacular fireworks. The most exciting moment is the “dance of the saint”, when the bearers lift the statue towards the sky, making it dance to the sound of joyful shouts and applause. The procession crosses the entire village, reaching the Iblean Gardens, where the celebration culminates in a final, extraordinary pyrotechnic display.
